Our History

Kids Konnect (formally known as Kids Across) was set up in 1994 and was the inspiration of Maureen Thomas.

Prior to setting up Kids Konnect Maureen would take her son Christopher, who was severely disabled and needed the support of several machines, on holidays to France with the Across Trust. All Maureen wanted was for Christopher to have the same opportunities as any other child and, at the time, the Across Trust were the only organisation that could offer Maureen the help she needed to take Christopher on holiday.

Sadly, Christopher died in 1993 at the age of 14. Following the loss of her son, Maureen decided to create a service to give other children the chance to experience a holiday of a lifetime: Kids Konnect was born.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Maureen and her team of volunteers, as well as the donations upon which the charity is completely reliant, Kids Konnect is now able to take children on these holidays four times a year.

Maureen’s efforts were recognised in 2002 when she was awarded the Mersey Marvel in association with the Liverpool Echo and Birmingham Midshires, in 2004 when she was presented with The Barnardo’s President’s Certificate of Appreciation and most recently in June 2009 when she was presented with the Unsung Hero Award at the Spirit of Merseyside Awards Ceremony.

Mission Statementdanielle

Kids Konnect exists to support and enable socially disadvantaged, severely disabled and terminally ill children to experience a holiday with a view to enhancing their quality of life.

We believe that every child has the right to be treated with dignity and respect in a positive and safe environment.

We provide holidays for children up to 17 years of age from every faith and ethnic background.

Our team of volunteers ranges from carers through to specialist nurses and doctors who cater for the complex medical needs of some of the children we support. Because of this dedicated support, we are also able to bring away the child’s parents/carers and siblings, thus enabling the family to have a holiday together that would otherwise be impossible.

Socially disadvantaged children are also welcomed, offering them a unique experience that they would not normally have access to.

We organise four holidays each year to Wales. To date we have helped over 2,000 young people from across the UK have a holiday of a lifetime.

These holidays make an incredible difference to the children as they provide the opportunity to visit places and take part in activities that are usually denied to them because of their condition or circumstances. By being able to participate in these positive experiences they get a real sense of achievement, and have some real fun.

Each child who participates in one of our holidays has their experiences documented in a memory book so that they can share visually their memories with families and loved ones.
